What Size Portable Generator Does Your Home Need?
-
100 Amp Electrical Utility Service | Portable Generator Sizing
Most homes with 100 amp electrical services can run off of a 30amp circuit breaker connection, and a 10,000 watt or less portable generator to power the whole house.
Especially if you have gas/propane appliances like a dryer or stove.
Buyers Note 1: Before you buy a generator for your house remember this. Do not try to run a portable generator that is too small for your house. You will end up sending electrical surges into your house causing whatever you have plugged in to get damage and lose life expectancy.
Buyers Note 2: When you install any generator or solar system on your house. Do yourself a favor, and get a whole home surge protector too please. Eventually you' ll learn why you want to install one, but best not to learn this lesson the hard way.

Most modern homes with 200 amp electrical services will need a 30 or 50amp circuit breaker connection, and a 12,000 to 15,000 watt portable generator or more in order to run their house safely off a portable generator.
If you do not have gas appliances in your home, then most likely you will need a 50amp circuit breaker connection to your house.

Two Ways To Hookup Your House To A Portable Generator
There are two main ways to hookup your home to a portable generator. One way is called a interlock generator kit. And the other way is called a manual transfer switch. These are installed in order to stop the generator from backfeeding power into utility grid.
-
Portable Generator Interlock Kit
An interlock kit for your portable generator is installed on the front of your electrical panel cover. It is a bracket that only allows you to either turn on the portable generator circuit breaker or the main utility circuit breaker.
An Interlock kit gives you the full amount of your homes electrical panel circuit breakers. This gives you the ability to power up what you want to during a power outage.
With this method you will have you make sure you are not overloading your portable generator as you power your house. Shut down the circuit breakers you are not using during a power outage in order to avoid this from happening.
This tends to be the most popular way to hookup a portable generator to a home.
Some electrical panel are too old to find an interlock kit that is suitable for installation.
-
Portable Generator Manual Transfer Switch
A manual transfer switch is installed in certain instances where you have to simplify the generator hookup process.
Limits the risk of overloading your portable generator.
Transfer switches come with either a 6 or 10 home electrical circuit option that you can choose from. This does limit you to having to choose what home circuits to power up during a power outage.
Tends to be more expensive to install.
