Home Safety Upgrade
Electrical Circuit Breakers
Circuit Breakers come with a few different features depending on what they are supplying power to.
Old Standard
-
Traditional Circuit Breaker
Old School Circuit Breakers
Traditional circuit breakers still do the essentials when it comes to protecting your home from electrical hazards. The main difference is that traditional circuit breakers don't have the added protection of fire prevention, and they lack a true testing function in order to make sure they are still working proper.
New Standard
-
New Arc Fault Circuit Breaker (AFCI)
New School AFCI Circuit Breakers
Arc fault protection or more commonly known as AFCI protection is the answer to the traditional circuit breakers lack of a true testing function, as well as the added function of electrical fire prevention. Basically when a fire hazard is detected, the AFCI circuit breaker will trip instantly as a proactive precaution. Whereas a traditional circuit breaker would have more of a delay to trip as a reactive precaution.
-
When Do I Need To Install AFCI Protection?
Your local town safety code will eventually require you to install AFCI circuit breakers whenever you add to an existing electrical circuit or if you replace an electrical device somewhere in your house.
The "Home Grandfather Rule" does not apply to installing home arc fault protection. It is now the new electrical safety code standard for all homes.
-
Can I Keep My Existing Circuit Breakers?
Circuit Breakers DO NOT LAST FOREVER! Circuit breakers should be replaced every 30 years or so depending on how much usage the circuit breaker gets. Make sure to keep up with maintaining your homes circuit breakers.
