Modern electrical safety practices & wiring methods were established around the 1980’s to early 2000’s. Homes that were built before that time tend to have what is called “two-wire home circuits”. These electrical circuits do not have a dedicated grounding wire like we have nowadays. There are a few crucial safety steps in order to install modern three-prong electrical outlets to an old two-wire home.
More Indoor Electrical Panel Space
We install a 200amp panel with 40 spaces that has the added ability to double up if you happen to start running out of spaces. This prevents you from having to install a sub-panel in the future if you run out of space inside your main electrical panel.
Added Outdoor Circuit Panel Space
New town safety code now requires a safety disconnect outside next the utility meter. We include the exterior meter/disconnect that has extra spaces for circuit breakers for future outdoor electrical projects.
Choosing Between a Standard Service Wire or PVC Service Wire in Conduit
Standard Service Wire
The electrical wire going up the side of your house that connects to an electrical company like Eversource can be a standard cable wire that is easier to install, and more affordable then conduit piping. Downside is that it typically doesn’t hold up as well to weather compared to PVC conduit throughout the years.
Or
PVC Service Wire Conduit
The exterior of your house takes a beating from the weather and sun. We have seen what happens overtime to utility services, and we recommend installing your service wires going up the side of your house in heavy duty PVC conduit to better protect against the weather. It is a little extra effort, but WELL worth it.
