How To Make Sure Your Home Is Grounded?

Home grounding system layout.

Why is Home Grounding is so important?

Not properly grounding your home electrical system means you can get a "bounce back effect" allowing an electrical surge to come back into the home, and devices rather than being dispersed into the Earth properly. Resulting in damaged home equipment. Not to mention personal safety hazards.

Old Home Grounding...

Some older homes may have not been updated since they were built, or have had remodels that were not done correctly. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't ensure your home is properly grounded. When evaluating your homes grounding system, Check to make sure you have a ground wire connected to your homes WATER meter, GAS/PROPANE meter, and TWO GROUNDING RODS on the exterior of your house. If you are having trouble identifying whether your home is properly grounded or not. Give a licensed electrician a call to verify.

Two-Prong Electrical Outlets are Ungrounded!

A lot of older homes still have two-prong electrical outlets instead of three-prong. This means the wire inside your walls are only two-wire circuits and they do not have a grounding wire. There are a few safety requirements when updating a home from two-prong to three-prong outlets. In order to avoid rewiring the house, we can instead use Ground-fault Protection to a ct as the missing grounding wire.
